“Perhaps the greatest journey isn’t across the world… perhaps it is the journey back to yourself.”
There are certain places in the world that seem to live inside us long before we ever arrive there.
For some, it is the mountains of Peru.
For others, the forests of Japan.
The Camino de Santiago in Spain.
The Himalayas.
Or the ancient temples of Egypt.
People often tell me,
“I’ve always wanted to go to Egypt.”
When I ask them why…
Many pause.
“I don’t know.”
“I’ve just always felt called.”
“I can’t explain it.”
That answer has always fascinated me.
Because perhaps the question isn’t,
Why Egypt?
Perhaps the deeper question is,
Why do certain places awaken something within us?
We travel to discover ourselves.
Modern culture often teaches us that travel is about seeing more.
More cities.
More monuments.
More photographs.
More experiences.
But pilgrimage has always been different.
Pilgrimage isn’t measured by how much we see.
It’s measured by how deeply we allow ourselves to be changed.
The destination matters.
But the transformation matters more.
As a Somatic Intimacy Leader, I have spent years watching something remarkable happen.
People often understand their lives intellectually.
They know why they are stressed.
Why they struggle in relationships.
Why they repeat certain patterns.
Yet understanding rarely changes the pattern.
The body must experience something different.
Our nervous systems don’t transform because someone gives us better information.
They transform because we experience safety differently.
Presence differently.
Connection differently.
This is why sacred journeys matter.
They interrupt our normal way of living.
Something fascinating happens when we leave our ordinary lives behind.
We stop answering the same emails.
We stop driving the same roads.
We stop solving the same daily problems.
For a few days…
The nervous system realizes something.
“I don’t have to survive right now.”
That single realization changes everything.
Breathing becomes slower.
Awareness becomes sharper.
The body begins noticing what constant busyness had hidden.
This is why many people experience clarity while traveling.
Not because the destination magically changes them.
Because distance creates perspective.
One of the greatest gifts Egypt offered me wasn’t found inside a temple.
It was found in the rhythm.
Watching the sunrise over the Nile.
Sailing slowly on a Dahabeya.
Walking through ancient spaces without rushing.
Having time to write.
Time to think.
Time to simply be.
As a mother, business owner, and teacher, I realized how rarely I allowed myself to experience that kind of spaciousness.
That alone became transformational.
Sometimes healing isn’t about doing more.
Sometimes it’s about creating enough space to finally hear ourselves again.
People often ask me if I believe Egypt has special energy.
My answer is simple.
I believe sacred places invite sacred questions.
Whether we experience those questions through history, spirituality, beauty, silence, or personal reflection is deeply individual.
My own experiences in Egypt were profoundly personal.
There were moments of awe.
Moments of gratitude.
Moments of disappointment.
Moments of remembrance.
I don’t expect others to experience Egypt the way I did.
And I think that’s exactly the point.
Pilgrimage isn’t about sharing identical experiences.
It’s about becoming available for our own.
One of the reasons I love leading relationship work in extraordinary places is because our relationships travel with us.
The same fears.
The same habits.
The same patterns.
The same love.
The same longing.
Yet something changes when we step outside ordinary life.
We begin seeing one another differently.
Not because our partners have changed.
Because we have slowed down enough to actually see them.
Sometimes a relationship doesn’t need fixing.
It needs spaciousness.
During my first pilgrimage to Egypt, I found myself reflecting on something unexpected.
I was deeply moved by the ancient temples.
Yet I also found myself asking another question.
How well do we care for the temples we inhabit every day?
Our bodies.
Ancient civilizations built extraordinary places devoted to reverence.
Today, many of us move through life disconnected from the one sacred place that has been with us since birth.
Our own nervous system.
Our own breath.
Our own heart.
Perhaps the first temple we are invited to restore isn’t made of stone.
Perhaps it is ourselves.
People sometimes ask me if Egypt changed my life.
I would answer differently.
Egypt created the conditions where I could hear myself more clearly.
When I returned home, I didn’t simply have beautiful memories.
I had clarity.
I completed projects that had been waiting for years.
I launched new trainings.
I deepened my commitment to my work.
I became more honest about the kind of relationships I wanted to cultivate.
The journey didn’t give me a new identity.
It helped me remember the one I was already becoming.
If you’ve ever felt drawn toward Egypt…
Maybe you don’t need to explain it.
Maybe you don’t need to justify it.
Maybe you don’t even need certainty.
Sometimes life quietly invites us somewhere because we are ready to meet a different version of ourselves.
Not a better version.
Not a more spiritual version.
Simply a more present one.
Perhaps the greatest mystery waiting in Egypt isn’t hidden inside a pyramid.
Perhaps it has been quietly waiting inside you.
And perhaps the greatest journey has never been across the world.
Perhaps it has always been the journey back to yourself.
