This position provides legal advice to H&R Block, Inc. and its subsidiaries on a variety of complex legal issues, including business operations and complex transactions in support of strategic imperatives.

 
Day to day, you'll...

  • Research, analyze and provide legal advice to business units on complex legal and compliance matters related to Company’s operations, product and strategic initiatives , particularly in the area of financial products and small business services.
  • Provide legal counsel and guidance regarding complex transactions involving sophisticated counterparties and external service providers, including professional services agreements, licenses, and other strategic sourcing agreements.
  • Assist with legal review and risk mitigation tactics regarding all aspects of client interactions, including consumer disclosures and agreements, identity verification and authentication, marketing, and customer service.
  • Work closely with the VP – Legal (Financial Services, Small Business & Franchise), Deputy General Counsel and key business partners to provide high level legal support on a variety of initiatives.
  • Monitor evolving laws that may impact the business and help design and implement compliant solutions.
  • Serve as a department subject matter expert on matters related to banking and financial products, payments, lending, financial technology, and small business support, including bookkeeping and payroll.
  • Contribute to team efforts by timely meeting commitments and working collaboratively with minimal supervision. 
  • Periodically assist with diverse high demand legal projects outside normal area of focus.
  • Manage outside counsel to achieve timely and desired results within budget. 
  • Some domestic or international travel may be required.
What you'll bring to the team...:
  • Juris Doctorate degree plus license to practice law in one or more states
  • A current member of the Missouri Bar or an ability to become a member of the Missouri Bar within six months
  • At least five years of legal experience at a large law firm, corporate legal department, or similar
  • Detail-oriented focus, with demonstrated analytical, problem-solving, and negotiation skills
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with an ability to communicate and persuade a wide range of audiences 
  • Ability to plan and coordinate multiple projects and work initiatives at the same time
  • Strong business acumen and an eagerness to partner with internal business colleagues to solve business issues

  • Significant experience providing legal advice on complex matters related to financial products and services in banking and/or fintech
  • Significant experience working on complex corporate transactions involving sophisticated counterparties and external service providers
  • Significant experience working with and providing legal advice to senior executives
  • Experience with AI powered tools and practices incorporated into daily work
