Position Overview The Substance Use Education Specialist serves as a role model, mentor, and motivator to substance use recovering individuals by staying engaged in their recovery process and preventing relapse. This role promotes a unique recovery approach tailored to each individual’s specific needs, provides peer support, and educates on available resources. The Specialist focuses on outreach and prevention efforts throughout the school system, in collaboration with community partners, and marketing and communication delivery across Harris County to reach the various demographics affected by substance use disorder (SUD). Duties & Responsibilities Work with community organizations to identify effective locations for naloxone vending machines and safe disposal drop boxes, promoting these resources in at-risk areas and providing education. Conduct outreach initiatives in schools and communities, focusing on areas identified as hotspots for overdose risk. Participate in community meetings to provide updates on overdose data, available resources, and ongoing challenges, inviting collaborative solutions from local stakeholders. Build relationships and partnerships to scale up referral resources within Harris County and increase awareness. Assist in work-plan implementation and maintenance, recording and submitting required programmatic and departmental reports, documenting work activities according to established protocols. Design and create spreadsheets, forms, graphs, pamphlets, etc., and prepare PowerPoint presentations for program services. Discuss and resolve challenges as they arise with Program Leadership and community partners. Participate in the planning, organization, and facilitation of community events. Perform other duties as assigned. Education High School Diploma or GED. Experience At least one (1) year of experience in recovery support services or related substance use services. Certified Peer Recover Specialist (CPRS), Recovery Support Peer Specialist (RSPS), or other related certification. Valid Texas Driver’s License. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Excellent communication skills (verbal & written). Excellent time-management and organizational skills. Demonstrates respect for the opinions and beliefs of others. Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information. Ability to maintain high ethical standards while working with clients & stakeholders. Ability to work well with public and staff members. Ability to collaborate well with community partners to ensure the best quality care of clients. Knowledge of substance use addiction and mental health in underserved communities. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Must be willing to flex work hours when required, including after hours and weekends. Able to travel within Harris County as needed. Work Environment This job operates in a professional office and community environment in the field. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computer, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. Physical Demands This role requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 20 pounds and bending & standing for periods at a time.
